December brings a plethora of musical delights celebrating the Christmas season. SaddleBrooke has an abundance of professional singers, choral directors and scholars who are still highly accomplished in their respective talents and share them with our community.

The Community Church of SaddleBrooke  is hosting a luncheon at the Mountain View ballroom featuring two soloists who will perform some of the most beloved and renowned Christmas Carols. Prior to each carol being performed, Douglas Wolf will read a short history of the composer and lyricist and how the carol came to be a favorite. Kris Dodge will tickling the ivories and Crystal Stark will provide her mellifluous tone and range to the carols.

Wednesday, December 7th

Barbershop style of singing comes to the fore with the SaddleBrooke Barbershop Chorus presenting Vocalocity and the Tucson Barbershop Experience as guest singers.  The title of this years performance Hear Those Jingle Bells. Barbershop was popularized in the 19th century -to wit from Wikipedia:

While the modern era of barbershop music is accepted to have begun with a 1940s revival, opinions as to the genre’s origins vary with respect to race, gender, region and context.

Historical memoirs and journalism indicate a strong tradition of quartet singing among young African American men, gathering informally to “crack up a chord”.[8] This was acknowledged as early as 1882, when a New York Age writer traced the development of this singing as a home-grown amusement, arising from the exclusion of Blacks from theaters and concert halls.[8] Jazz musician Louis Armstrong told of having harmonized on New Orleans street corners as a boy, and NAACP executive secretary James Weldon Johnson “grew up singing barbershop harmony”.[9]

Douglas Wolf will act as emcee for the evening.

DESERT VIEW PERFORMING ARTS

A Christmas Odyssey is the title of the show being performed by our own SaddleBrooke Singers. Director, Tanya Elias promises that with members coming from all over this country, the SaddleBrooke Singers chorus has been bringing music to SaddleBrooke, Arizona for 27 years. This Christmas, the SaddleBrooke Singers will take you on an adventurous odyssey where you’ll be swept into an exploration of winter, led through wacky adventures at the North Pole, accompanied on an international expedition, followed by a sentimental voyage home. Before the night is over, we’ll journey to humble Bethlehem, and our odyssey will conclude with a dynamic stroll on Broadway.

One show only, Saturday December 10th, get tickets at dvpac.net
