If you know someone who speaks Mandarin, bring them along to Potwhale Hot Pot restaurant in Tucson. You don’t have to have someone who speaks Mandarin with you, but it seemed easier with someone who did. Hotpot is a dish where you take raw ingredients, such as thinly sliced meat, leafy vegetables, small meat balls, and other foods and cook them at the table by dipping them in boiling broth. In our eating adventure we had a split hot pot, one side spicy and the other side a regular broth. The broth is seasoned with garlic, ginger, soy sauce and other seasonings.

What are the favorite foods to cook in the hotpot? People like crispy pork, dumplings, fish balls, crab sticks, prime beef, and mushroom medley. The very fresh mushrooms and vegetables are boiled in the hot pot and you pluck them out with your chop sticks.

We found that the meats tasted better when cooked in the spicy hot pot and the vegetables were better in the standard broth. My favorite vegetables were baby bok choy and spinach. You can also add noodles and many other items to make your hop pot sizzle. There is also a stand for dip selections where you can select hot, medium, or mild dips for your cooked delicacies. Wash it all down with sweet chrysanthemum tea or jasmine tea.

If you are new to hot pot, explain that to your server. They will provide help and suggestions if you need them. This is a communal meal where everyone cooks their food in the same one or two pots. The pots are heated at the table. It is a medium-priced meal and the price depends on what you are cooking. Enjoy a taste of something completely different with a hot pot experience.
