Why is Kris Mayes Here At This Time?

While promoting a public interest agenda, Mayes is in a tenuous situation regarding re-election. This is clearly a means of campaigning without expending campaign funds as she has not been in this area since being elected in 2022.

Since Mayes was elected, she has been relentlessly preening to her progressive base by bringing multiple lawsuits against the Trump administration, beginning with the “fake electors” case which was recently rejected by the appeals court. Her latest gambit is a lawsuit to try and force Congress to seat Adelita Grijalva, recent winner of election in CD 7. This is rubbish and Mayes knows it. The Constitution is very clear that only the Congress, no ambitious AG or court can force the Congress to seat a member.

Mayes has also positioned herself as the consumer watchdog, suing multiple companies, including Saddle Brooke’s favorite, Amazon! Her claim is that Amazon selectively promotes high margin products in their online store. Of course, every retailer in America does exactly the same thing with “end-cap” specials, shelf location promotions, co-op advertising dollars, you get the idea. But those facts do not deter Mayes from making a big splash to the mainstream media which is so neutered they fail to add that to their reporting. She cynically knows that all her anti-Trump and anti-big business efforts are feckless, but give her credit for knowing how to use her office to campaign.

Arizona Commerce Commision Candidates

Two challengers for the two contested seats on the Arizona Commerce Commission took the stage in front of the Republican Club, Thursday the 16th to promote their paired candidacies for the Commission. Arizona has a regulatory structure for utilities whereby five commissioners oversee the rates and operations of our water, power, sewer, mines, railroads and all cross-county utility companies. Ergo, they have enormous power.

Republican David Marshall and Dr. Ralph Heap are running to replace two sitting Republicans. Challenging incumbent members of your own party is not unusual for Arizona Republicans, while nearly unheard (Senator Sinema a recent exception)  of in the Democrat party. Republicans for better or worse, tend to be more individualistic and challenge incumbents when they perceive the incumbent as being not party loyal or varying too much from party doctrine.

Marshall and Heap made the case that the incumbents have “bought in” to the Green New Deal and are not seeing the future of energy properly. For example, the nuclear power at Palo Verde has 3 empty pads that could be used to add millions of KW to the Arizona grid and are not under consideration (For reference the Sierra Club has recently endorsed nuclear power as the best option regarding global climate change. )

David Marshall

Dr.Heap

Both candidates have served in the Arizona Legislature.
