Senior Freeze Deadline Looms for Property Taxes

Pinal County Assessor Douglas Wolf reminded residents that the deadline to apply for the county’s “Senior Freeze” tax savings is Sept. 1.
The state program, formally called Senior Property Valuation Protection Option, freezes property value of qualifying homes for three years, effectively lowering tax bills owed to the county.
Speaking during the public comment portion of the Board of Supervisors Aug. 6 meeting, Wolf encouraged eligible seniors to apply for the program.
“This exemption basically freezes your property values for three years and it’s renewable,” the assessor said. “We want everybody to apply who is deserving and in the county.”
The state authorized freeze has a few rules: it applies to homeowners 65 or older, who make under $46,416 for single owners and $58,020 for two or more owners. Homeowners must have lived in their primary Pinal County residence for at least two years.
This program does not freeze actual property tax bills, only the property valuation used to calculate those taxes.
Applicants have to submit paperwork in person to the assessor’s office. There are offices in Apache Junction, San Tan Valley, Casa Grande and Florence. Details and application instructions are available on the Pinal County Assessor’s Office website or by calling the office directly.
“We want to make sure every eligible senior takes advantage of this protection,” said Wolf.
