SaddleBrooke resident Sandy Mader, a longtime volunteer with Cody’s Friends, was killed Saturday early-morning at the intersection of Oracle Road and Eagle Crest Blvd. According to posts on social media, a truck driver ran a red light and struck a car on the driver’s door. The driver of was Sandra Mader, a well know resident who was deeply committed to Rescuing Pets. The intersection was closed for many hours, as is always the case when a fatality is involved.

According to a social media posting by Cody’s Friends :

We are deeply saddened by the news that Sandy M. was tragically killed in a car accident on Saturday. Sandy “single-handedly” protected the paws of hundreds of pups in Tucson for many years with her durable handmade booties she made and donated to Cody’s Friends almost every week for us to give out. In lieu of flowers her family is requesting donations to Cody’s Friends or to an animal or music based charity of your choice. All donations we receive in honor of Sandy will go to help us continue her mission to provide booties to protect the paws of pups in need. codysfriends.org

Arrest Made:

35-year-old Cassandra Lee, of Green Valley, was arrested on a manslaughter charge and may have been texting when she ran a red light and crashed into Mader.

Community Response

Many posted that running that light either north or south by scoff-laws on Oracle Road is witnessed daily and asked for a more robust police presence.

SaddleBrooke residents use that intersection to access the retail outlets on both sides of Oracle Road. Others, by pass that stretch and use Lago Del Oro which was recently re-paved and now invites speeders on that road!
