Fig Food Combos for your Holiday Guests!

What to do with all those figs. There are fig jams, fig bars, fig bread, and fig cakes. Without adding more breads and cakes to your meal plan, try fig appetizers. Figs pair with vinegar, cheese, and nuts for a delicious fresh fig appetizer.

Start with a baguette and top with all kinds of fig combinations to make a fresh fig treat.

Top with a Spanish combination. After spreading goat cheese on your baguette slice, top with a Serrano ham, and chopped fig combination. Drizzle with a Spanish sherry vinegar.  A few chopped Marcona almonds add texture to your appetizer.

If you prefer Italian, spread ricotta cheese on the baguette slices, top with chopped figs,  prosciutto, and a well-aged balsamic vinegar. Add some crunch with toasted pine nuts or chopped pistachios.

Want a more American combination? Top your bruschetta with chopped figs and bacon. Add blue cheese crumbles and champagne vinegar. Broil the baguettes to just melt the blue cheese. Top with a whole walnut or pecan.

If you prefer a sweeter touch, drizzle any of these combinations with just a touch of honey.

Here is a great combination using fresh figs.

  • Fig and Blue Cheese Bruschetta
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • ½ a baguette sliced into ½ inch slices
  • 1 cup diced fresh figs
  • 1 Tbsp sherry vingetar
  • 4 ounces blue cheese, crumbled
  • Torn fresh basil for garnish
  1. Heat the olive oil in a nonstick skillet. Add the baguette slices and toast on both sides until browned and crisp. Cool the baguette slices.
  2. Mixed the chopped fresh figs with sherry vinegar. Let this sit at room temperature for 2 hours. Add a little salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Spread the fig mixture on the toasted baguette slices.
  4. Top with blue cheese chunks. Warm the baguettes slices in the oven until the cheese starts to get soft. Sprinkle chopped basil on the top to add a little color.
  5. Serve while warm
