Staying Wet in the Desert Courtesy of Israel

SBINSIDER REPORTING BY GLORIA LINARES| February 16th, 2024

The Stand with Israel Club of SaddleBrooke featured speaker Sharon Megdal, Ph.D. of the University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) on Thursday February 6. Megdal provided a view into the water issues facing both Arizona and the Colorado River Basin and Israeli-Palestinian region. Many new technologies are being used in Israel to resolve potential water issues.  While Pima county alone is larger than Israel, many more people need water in Israel. Their efficiency has been enhanced to meet their water demands.

Israel employs innovative government plans, initiatives, and policies to extend water use. They modify the crop microclimate by using screens and other techniques to reduce evaporation. Water recycling and desalination. Competition between multiple drip irrigation suppliers has improved the efficiency of water delivery. What we can learn from Israel can be used here in Arizona and the Colorado River Basin to assure water supplies in the future.

The SaddleBrooke Public Affairs Committee has an upcoming presentation an water issues, tying in with the recent sale of Lago del Oro water to JW Water which in turn is owned by CVC, a British mega company.
